Log Home Surface Preparation
The most important step in the appearance of your restored home and the longevity of your stain is the surface preparation; the objective is to remove all grime and residue in preparing the logs. This normally involves the stripping of an existing finish or coating, and the preparation of the logs to receive stain.
At Summit Restoration, LLC, the two methods used for finish removal are media blasting and chemical stripping.
We favor media blasting as our preference for surface preparation. It is not only that the media is bio degradable and friendly to the environment but this process also takes the logs back to the natural wood, texturing thelogs enhancing the absorption of the stain providing a beautiful finish with longevity. With our media blaster along with a compressor, precise settings and media, we effectively remove aged wood, light stains, badly weathered stains, and water base stains. For more difficult stains, such as a thick, hard finish, paint, or anything unique, we would make the proper adjustments for the best surface preparation of your logs. Media blasting is a dry process allowing immediate application and absorption of stain. The average home takes about two tons of media to remove the finish. That is about six heaping truck loads. Take a minute to imagine where all that media is going to go!!/p>

The second part of surface preparation is sanding/buffing; this often overlooked or neglected. We, at Summit Restoration LLC, understand the importance of sanding the roughness out of the wood, helping to achieve a lighter finished color when the staining is done. We grind down the log ends so that once stained, logs are less susceptible to rot.
